Certificate of Analysis review is often treated as a routine task, but routine does not mean automatic. A careful review helps confirm whether the document is complete, consistent and appropriate within the agreed documentation framework.
Start with completeness
Check whether the expected identifiers, results, references and approvals are present. A missing field can create disproportionate follow-up later.
Look for internal consistency
The COA should make sense within itself. Values, units, product identifiers and approval details should be clear and consistent.
Check alignment with related documentation
A COA does not exist in isolation. It may need to align with specifications, batch records or the relevant review context.
Review readability
Even a technically complete document can be hard to interpret. Clear formatting and consistent structure matter because they reduce ambiguity during later review.
Escalate what cannot be comfortably explained
If a result, format issue or discrepancy needs repeated interpretation, it likely needs clarification before final acceptance.
